A crunchy, golden-brown topping of flour, sugar and butter lets the apples shine in this Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp. Simple ingredients, no oats, and an old-fashioned flavor make it a comforting fall dessert that tastes like something your grandmother might have baked.

This easy apple recipe comes from Lynd’s Fruit Farm in central Ohio and quickly became a favorite. We’ve tested the recipe several times and discovered a few tips that keep the topping and sauce balanced so every bite is satisfying.
Because the topping contains only flour, sugar and butter, the apples’ flavor stands out. It’s meant to be baked in a deep square dish so the apples cook in a little sauce while a crisp, crumbly crust forms on top.
DO These Things:
- Bake in an 8×8″ or 9×9″ square dish for the best topping-to-apple ratio.
- Serve warm in small bowls to capture the sauce that forms during baking.
- Add a scoop of slightly softened vanilla ice cream on top for a classic pairing.
- Spoon the sauce from the bottom of the baking dish over each serving to get the full flavor.

Avoid Doing This:
- Using a 9×13″ pan — the topping becomes too thin and the sauce-to-crust balance is lost.
- Serving on a plate — plates make it difficult to retain and enjoy the sweet sauce that gathers in the bottom of the baking dish.
- Using a fork — a spoon picks up apples, sauce and crumb topping more easily.

Ingredients Needed
- Apples – Jonathan or Granny Smith (slightly tart baking apples work best)
- Water – creates a simple sauce as the apples bake
- Cinnamon – for warm spice
- All-Purpose Flour – forms the crumb topping
- Granulated Sugar – sweetens the topping and sauce
- Butter – softened, for rich flavor in the topping

If you want a different twist, try adding chopped nuts or a splash of lemon juice to brighten the apples, but keep the topping ratios the same for the best texture.
Step By Step Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter an 8×8″ square casserole dish.
Peel, core and slice the apples and arrange them evenly in the prepared dish. Pour 1/2 cup water into the dish and sprinkle 1 teaspoon cinnamon over the apples. Use a spoon to toss the slices lightly so the cinnamon coats them.
In a medium bowl, combine 3/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1 cup granulated sugar. Beat or mash in 7 tablespoons softened butter, then use a pastry blender or fork to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly and the pieces are pea-sized.

Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the cinnamon-coated apples, covering the surface.

Bake at 350°F for 30–35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the top begins to turn golden. The topping may not brown uniformly across the surface; that’s normal. The water will form a light sauce under the apples—spoon some over each serving.
The advantage of the deep square pan is thicker layers of apples and sauce with a substantial crumb crust. Serve warm with a scoop of slightly softened vanilla ice cream for a classic finish.

Avoid A Thin Apple Crisp
Using a 9×13″ pan spreads the apples and topping too thin, leaving less crumb in each bite. Stick with a square 8×8″ pan for the intended texture and balance.
