I love tortilla chips, but many store-bought varieties contain trans fats, artificial colors, and other additives. After making homemade tortillas, I decided to try baked tortilla chips that are simple, wholesome, and much cleaner than packaged options.
This recipe is incredibly easy: cut the tortillas, optionally brush with a little olive oil, bake for about five minutes, then toss with your favorite spices. The olive oil step is optional — the chips still crisp up nicely without it.

The result is wonderfully crunchy chips with a hint of heat from cayenne pepper. You can customize the seasoning to your taste — paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, or nutritional yeast all work great.

These baked chips are an excellent choice for people who are lactose intolerant or have celiac disease since they are made from corn tortillas and contain no dairy. I avoid dairy myself and often found packaged chips flavored with cheese, so making chips at home gives me control over the ingredients.

We also enjoy these with a homemade vegan cheese dip that has a similar texture and flavor to dairy cheese — simple, tasty, and addictive. Pairing the baked chips with a creamy dip makes a great snack or appetizer.

Ingredients
- 4 tortillas
- Extra virgin olive oil, optional
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon nutritional yeast
- ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika
- 1 cayenne pepper
Instructions
-
Cut the tortillas into triangles. If desired, lightly brush each piece with extra virgin olive oil or another neutral vegetable oil, then arrange them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
-
Preheat the oven to 390ºF (200ºC) and bake on the middle rack for about 5 minutes. Remove the chips and let them cool so they crisp up.
-
Combine the seasonings—onion powder, garlic powder, nutritional yeast, sweet paprika, and cayenne—in a small bowl or food processor and mix until evenly blended.
-
Toss the cooled chips with the spice blend. You can sprinkle and gently rub the seasoning onto the chips by hand to ensure even coverage. Serve immediately with your favorite dip.
