Life is always changing, and so should our thoughts. When I feel down, uninspired, or mentally bogged down, it’s usually because my mind is full of information it doesn’t need. That clutter starts to feel overwhelming and frightening.

Those thoughts need an outlet so I can reclaim mental space and return to being happier, healthier, and more productive. Here are a few practices I do regularly to clear my mind and feel more like myself again.

8 Easy Ways To Clear Your Mind

1. Brain dump

A brain dump means writing down everything on your mind right now. Even if your thoughts are racing and you struggle to keep up, putting them on paper brings relief and clarity. I do this almost every day. Include to-dos, recurring worries, plans, and random ideas. I often do it in the morning or after a nap, but sometimes I do it in the evening depending on how I feel.

2. Exercise

Any movement helps, but when I’m overwhelmed I often choose Pilates. It’s something achievable even when I don’t feel like doing much else. Ten minutes in and I’m usually ready to engage with my day. Mindful movement combined with focused breathing calms the nervous system and clears mental noise.

3. Take a Nap

Short naps can be incredibly restorative. When I had a desk job, I’d sneak tiny “nano-naps” of a minute or two and they felt surprisingly refreshing. Being exhausted makes your thoughts spiral and impairs your judgment. Sleep resets the brain—so get enough rest, even if that means a brief recharge during the day.

4. Let it flow

Engage in creative activities—sing, whistle, paint, knit, DIY—anything that lets you produce without worrying about perfection. Creative flow pulls your attention to the present and gives your mind a break from repetitive worries. I’ll sing while doing laundry or scribble freely; the outcome doesn’t matter, the process does.

5. Go out for a walk

Walking doesn’t have to be about hitting step goals. Walks can be meditative if you let them. I try to notice nature around me—the trees, birds, or even small animals—and stay present. When I’m distracted, I rush through the walk absorbed in thoughts and miss the experience. Consciously observing your surroundings helps calm the mind.

6. Clean your space.

You don’t need to perform a full Marie Kondo overhaul. Just tidy to the level that feels comfortable: remove clothes and items you no longer need, give things a dedicated spot, and keep surfaces clear. A cleaner environment often leads to calmer thoughts. Even when I’m not naturally tidy, taking time to organize my apartment usually settles my mind.

7. Talk to someone. Anyone.

Talking helps more than I used to believe. Share your thoughts with a friend, a colleague, or even a stranger. You don’t need deep vulnerability or to ask for advice—simply voicing your thoughts can help you process them and gain perspective. Sometimes a fresh voice offers new insight; other times, speaking aloud is enough to sort things out.

8. A Different Kind Of Detox

If you’re stuck in repetitive thoughts, you might be repeating the same routines and consuming the same media. Take a short break: unplug from your phone, social media, TV, and habitual inputs. A change of scenery or a brief detox can reset your outlook and reveal that there’s more to life than your current loop.

Stepping away from familiar patterns helps you return with renewed perspective and energy.
