Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Zebra Cakes – Swap in Zebra Cakes or another snack cake if Christmas Trees aren’t available.
  • Sprinkles – Use only green or red sprinkles if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Vanilla – Stir in a teaspoon of vanilla extract for extra flavor.
  • Sour Cream – Replace marshmallow creme with sour cream for a tangier dip.
  • Yellow Cake Mix – Use yellow cake mix in place of chopped snack cakes for a different texture.

Necessary gear: Equipment

You don’t need anything fancy. A stand mixer makes the job easiest, but a hand mixer, food processor, or even a bit of elbow grease with a spoon will work.

Have a serving bowl and plates ready for dippers.

Mel’s kitchen notes

If you don’t have a stand mixer, a hand mixer or food processor will work. You can also finely chop the snack cakes by hand and mix with a spoon—just expect to use a little more elbow grease.
